Gun and Bullets

How It Works

SDSA

Self-Defence South Africa (SDSA) is the national framework that standardises, assesses, and certifies responsible firearm owners and instructors for real-world self-defence carry.

Our system is practical, lawful, and built around accountability.

1
Register with SDSA

Firearm owners, instructors, and partner ranges start by registering on the SDSA platform.

  • Private firearm owners register as candidates
  • Instructors apply for SDSA accreditation
  • Shooting ranges apply as SDSA Partner Ranges

Registration creates a verified SDSA profile and access to the SDSA ecosystem.

2
Choose the Correct Path

SDSA recognises that not everyone is at the same level.

Candidates are guided into the correct pathway based on:

  • Firearm ownership status
  • Experience level
  • Intended use (self-defence / EDC)
  • Legal compliance

This ensures no unnecessary training, but also no shortcuts.

3
Train at an SDSA-Accredited Range

All training and assessments are conducted only at SDSA-accredited partner ranges, by SDSA-accredited instructors.

Training focuses on:

  • Safe and lawful firearm handling
  • Practical self-defence skills
  • Everyday Carry (EDC) realities
  • Decision-making under stress
  • Accountability and responsibility

No gimmicks. No “tactical theatre”. Only real-world relevance.

4
Practical Assessment

Certification is earned — not given.

Candidates are assessed on:

  • Safe firearm handling
  • Competence and control
  • Practical defensive shooting
  • Mindset and judgement
  • Compliance with legal principles of self-defence

Assessment standards are nationally aligned, ensuring consistency across South Africa.

5
SDSA Certification & EDC Status

Successful candidates receive:

  • An SDSA Self-Defence Certification
  • EDC-related status where applicable
  • A digital SDSA record linked to their profile

Certification demonstrates commitment to responsibility, not just competence.

6
Continuous Development

SDSA is not a once-off event.

Certified members are encouraged to:

  • Maintain skills through refresher training
  • Attend SDSA-aligned courses
  • Progress through higher competency levels
  • Remain accountable as responsible firearm carriers

This creates a culture of responsibility, not entitlement.

7
National Recognition

Because SDSA operates through a national network:

  • Standards are consistent
  • Assessments are credible
  • Certifications are traceable
  • Instructors and ranges are accountable

SDSA exists to raise the standard, protect responsible owners, and strengthen the firearms community.
